So next thing on our agenda, as we start to discuss these other things, is a discussion of time and place. So what do you think is a good time to have a lecture? 11 AM? Yeah. And the reason is most people at MIT are awake by then, and hardly anyone has gone back to sleep. It’s not right after a meal. People aren’t fatigued from this or that. It’s a great time to have a lecture. So that brings me, next, to the question of what about the place? And the most important thing about the place is that it be well lit. This room is well lit. Problem with other kinds of rooms is that we humans, whenever the lights go down, or whenever the room is dimly lighted, it signals that we should go to sleep. So whenever I go somewhere to give a talk, even today, the first thing I do when I speak to the audio-visual people is say, keep the lights full up. Oh, they might reply, people will see the slides better if we turn the lights off, and then I reply, it’s extremely hard to see slides through closed eyelids. What else can you say about the place? Well, the place should be cased, and I mean that in a colloquial sense, of like if you’re robbing a bank, you would go to the bank some occasions before to see what it’s like, so there are no surprises when you do your robbery. So whenever I go somewhere to speak, the first thing I ask my host to do is to take me to the place where I’ll be speaking so that if there are any weirdnesses, I’ll be able to deal with it. Sometimes, it might require some intervention. Sometimes, it just might require me to understand what the challenges are. So when I came here this morning, I did what I typically do. I imagined that all the seats were filled with disinterested farm animals, and that way, I knew that, no matter how bad it was, it wouldn’t be as bad as that. So finally, it should be reasonably– it should be reasonably populated. It should be the case that– if there were 10 people in this hall, everyone would be wondering, what’s going on that’s so much more interesting that nobody’s here. So you want to get a right sized place that’s– doesn’t have to be packed, but it has to be more than half full. So those are some thoughts about a time and place.

And the most important thing about the place is that it be well lit.

場所について最も重要なことは、それが明るく照らされていることです。

This room is well lit.

この部屋は明るいですね。

Problem with other kinds of rooms is that we humans, whenever the lights go down, or whenever the room is dimly lighted, it signals that we should go to sleep.

部屋に関する問題点としては、私たち人間は、部屋が暗かったり、または薄暗いときはいつでも、眠くなるようなシグナルを出してしまうことです。

So whenever I go somewhere to give a talk, even today, the first thing I do when I speak to the audio-visual people is say, keep the lights full up.

だから、どこかに講演に行くときはいつでも、今日でも、講義中に対面する聴講者と話をするときに最初にすることは、照明を一番明るくすることです。

そうするとこういった意見が出てくるでしょう。電気を消したほうがスライドをよく見えるじゃないか。そして私はこう答えます。まぶたを閉じてしまってはスライドを見るのはは難しいんじゃないか、と。

What else can you say about the place?

場所について他に何が言えますか？

Well, the place should be cased, and I mean that in a colloquial sense, of like if you’re robbing a bank, you would go to the bank some occasions before to see what it’s like, so there are no surprises when you do your robbery.

補足

「be cased」はケースに入れられているように保護されている状態を表していると思いましたので、「準備が整っている」と訳しました。

そうですね、場所は準備が整っている必要があります。つまり、口語的な意味で、銀行強盗をするならば、前もって何度か銀行に行ってその様子を確認していれば、当日驚くことはないでしょう。

So whenever I go somewhere to speak, the first thing I ask my host to do is to take me to the place where I’ll be speaking so that if there are any weirdnesses, I’ll be able to deal with it.

そのため、講演に行くときはいつでも、最初に主催者に依頼して講演する場所に連れて行ってもらい、奇妙なことはないか、自分で対処可能か確認します。

Sometimes, it might require some intervention.

場合によっては、何らかの介入が必要になる場合があります。

Sometimes, it just might require me to understand what the challenges are.

So when I came here this morning, I did what I typically do.

補足

「It should be the case that」は正直わからなかったのですが、「That might be the case.」がそういうことかもしれない、という意味らしいので、それよりも強い表現だと思い、必ずこういうことになるんだが、と訳しました。

So you want to get a right sized place that’s– doesn’t have to be packed, but it has to be more than half full.

つまり、適切なサイズである必要があり、満員でなくとも、半分以上が埋まっている必要があります。
